Let Truth Shape Experience

The sun is shining (good) BUT the printer’s playing up (bad!) - Does my peace depend upon the printer working or the sun shining? No, But my feelings tell me otherwise. My feelings are not of rest and comfort and confidence in Jesus.
Recognise what I am talking about? Sometimes our experience does not match up with what we say we believe. Question: should we change what we believe to match our experience. Isn't that more honest? Isn't that what being real is all about?
Faith is a mystery. Seeing into the unseen requires faith. Without faith we cannot please God it says in Hebrews. To really live the life of a disciple we need to be doing what Jesus said to do, believing what He said to believe.
Just read John’s gospel chapters 13 to 17 and you will see many astounding things that Jesus said about Himself, Holy Spirit, God the Father and us. He talks about being with us to the end of the age, He says he calls us friends, He says whatever we ask in His name He will do, He says we are one with Him and the Father, He says the Holy Spirit will come to us in his place, and then, perhaps most astounding of all He says that we will be able to do the works He did and greater works! We will be like Him both in character and in doing supernatural works like His!
So do we settle for less than He promises, authorises and calls us to do because our experience does not yet match up to His words, or do we go on believing and seek to be and do what He says. We get to choose. My choice is still to believe in His promises because He is the only one who always speaks the truth and always keeps His promises.
